The ancient prototype of the gran piano, the harpsicord, had two keyboards, one for "forte" and the other "piano" playing, and the spunds were produced by means of points of quill or hardened leather, which plucked at the strings. In the modern grand piano the strings are struck by felt covered hammers, actuated by intricate levers with so perfect an action that every shade of expression is reproduced. - There is a border around the image.
